1991年8月畢業後在中國船舶總公司研究院工作。
1992年9月赴美國攻讀博士學位。
1995年博士畢業後在美國芝加哥工作，任大學教授。
之前執教於美國伊利諾伊理工斯圖沃特商學院，享有終身教職。
曾任教於香港科技大學、北京大學、中歐商學院(CEIBS)。
曾任長江商學院副院長，戰略創新與創業管理實踐教授。
2017年3月16日下午，廖建文已確認從長江商學院離職。
2017年4月17日，京東集團宣布，任命廖建文擔任京東集團首席戰略官（CSO）。
2018年2月8日，任中國聯通(600050)公司第六屆董事會非獨立董事。

學術成就
廖建文教授以在戰略、創新和創業領域的跨學科研究而知名。他積極參與了創業動力定組研究計劃 (Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics)，這是對美國新興企業家以及合資創業的第一次大規模、橫向研究。他曾在《戰略企業家雜誌》、《企業創業學雜誌》、《創業理論與實踐》、《小企業管理期刊》、《小企業經濟學》以及《高新技術管理研究期刊》上發表30篇學術論文。他的一篇研究報告曾被《小企業經濟學》選為特寫文章。他的研究和教學成果為其贏得了眾多獎勵和榮譽，其中包括美國小型企業管理局授予的研究經費獎勵（2007、2008）以及2009年度的伊利諾伊理工斯圖沃特商學院傑出教學獎。
廖建文教授經常就戰略和創新領域為中國的知名企業以及跨國公司進行谘詢和演講。他的谘詢和演講客戶包括福特、安捷倫、諾基亞西門子網絡、阿爾卡特朗訊、偉世通、伊利、中信、華誼兄弟、龍湖地產，徐工，中海油，新東方等企業。廖建文教授也曾出席CNBC中國、中央電視台第9頻道等知名媒體的專題節目，同時為《21世紀經濟商業評論》和《北大商業評論》等刊物撰寫專欄。此外，他還曾任美國中小型企業管理局的顧問。
